Modern car keys are small computers. Most contain a transponder chip that talks to your car’s immobilizer, and push-to-start keys also handle keyless entry. So losing one is more involved than copying a house key. Here are your options.
Option 1: The dealership
Dealers can make any key for the brands they sell. The downsides:
- If all keys are lost, the car usually has to be towed to the dealer.
- Parts may need to be ordered, which takes days.
- Dealer pricing for smart keys is often the highest you’ll find.
Some very new or luxury models still require dealer-only programming. A good locksmith will tell you honestly if yours is one of them.
Option 2: A mobile automotive locksmith
A mobile locksmith comes to the car with key-cutting and programming equipment. For most makes and models, we can:
- Cut the key blade from your VIN or by decoding the lock
- Program a new transponder key or smart fob to the vehicle
- Delete lost keys from the car’s memory so they no longer start it
- Do it all on site, without a tow
For most drivers in Metro Detroit, that means faster service and lower cost than the dealer.
Option 3: Buying a fob online
Online fobs can be cheap, but be careful. Many are used and locked to another vehicle, the wrong frequency, or poor quality. Before you buy, send the part number to a locksmith and ask whether it can be programmed.
What you’ll need
- Your VIN (on the dashboard by the windshield or on your registration)
- Photo ID and proof of ownership
- The vehicle’s year, make and model
Don’t wait until you’re down to zero keys
Making a spare from an existing key is far cheaper than replacing your last one. If you only have one key, now is the time to add a second.
