Locked Out of Your Car? Here's What to Do

A step-by-step guide to handling a car lockout in Metro Detroit — staying safe in winter, checking for a spare, and getting back in without damage.

By the Metro Detroit Locksmith team ·

A car lockout is one of the most common reasons people call a locksmith in Oakland and Macomb County, and it happens at the worst times: a gas station on a January night, a crowded lot at a concert, or the driveway when you’re already late. Here is what to do, step by step.

1. Make sure everyone is safe

If a child, a vulnerable adult or a pet is locked inside the vehicle, call 911 first. In Michigan summers, a closed car heats up dangerously fast, and in winter, the cold is a real risk too. Emergency responders can open the vehicle immediately.

If you are stranded on the shoulder of a busy road like I-75, I-696 or M-59, stay well away from traffic while you wait.

2. Check every door and the trunk

It sounds obvious, but one rear door or the hatch is often still unlocked. On many vehicles, the trunk release can be reached by folding down a rear seat once you are inside.

3. Look for a spare key or app unlock

  • Is there a spare key at home that someone can bring you?
  • Many newer Ford, GM, Stellantis, Toyota and Honda vehicles can be unlocked remotely through the manufacturer’s app or a connected-car service.
  • Your roadside assistance plan (through insurance or a credit card) may include lockout help, though wait times vary.

4. Don’t try to force it

Coat hangers, slim jims and screwdrivers can damage the door’s wiring, side-impact airbag sensors, window seals and paint. Modern doors are full of electronics. A repair can easily cost more than a locksmith.

5. Call a local automotive locksmith

A professional uses air wedges and long-reach tools designed to open the door without damage. When you call, ask:

  • What is the total price? Get a firm quote, not just a “service fee.”
  • How long until you arrive?
  • What’s the company’s name? Be wary of businesses that answer with a generic “locksmith services.”

Have your ID and proof of ownership (registration or insurance card) ready. Any reputable locksmith will ask for it.

What if the keys are lost, not locked inside?

If your keys are actually lost, a mobile automotive locksmith can usually cut and program a new key at the vehicle, so you don’t need a tow to the dealer. Learn more about our car key replacement and key fob programming services.

Prevent the next lockout

  • Keep a spare key somewhere safe (not in a magnet box on the car).
  • Replace your fob battery when the range starts getting shorter.
  • Set up your vehicle’s app for remote unlock.
